~ AIMS AND GOALS ~
The aim of South Coast Ballet is to present the beautiful art of classical ballet to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
We endeavour to present the traditional classics alongside the creation of new and original works. Our goal is to make ballet
accessible and affordable for everyone, so that all people can experience this most beautiful, meaningful and enjoyable of
all the art forms.
Our company is made up of young dancers who are born, bred, live and train in Dorset. Their
youthfulness, freshness and vitality is what makes our performances of classical ballet so enjoyable and enriching - all
our dancers want to please the audience and be on the stage giving it their all!
Our unique perspective on the
ballets we present gives them a richness and sense of invigoration that sadly seems lacking in some touring ballet companies.
We are committed to presenting classical ballet productions that are structured upon a full narrative story and focused towards
people of all generations as well as ballet lovers. Our dancers absolutely 'love' to be on the stage and performing
to an audience - of that there is no doubt, and it is this 'feeling' which transcends the footlights and makes audiences
love our productions so much!
It's not just the cost either - even though you can attend all three of our
productions in one year, and it will cost you less than one single ticket to a named touring ballet company. This is truly
value for money in these hard times! and worth consideration. Your patronage of South Coast Ballet as an audience member
is much appreciated and goes a long way to supporting the artistic development of local young dancers.
But
that's not all! We wholeheartedly promote local homegrown talent from the dancers to the various creative teams (such
as the Lighthouse technical staff) who are involved in bringing each ballet to creative life. Dorset is so full of talent!
The dancers who are members of the company are learning so much about the 'real' theatre and life as a dancer,
all while enjoying the wonderful opportunities to explore their potential as performing artists. Who knows who will go on
to a future career in dance or the performing arts? Regardless, it is heartening to know that we will have played some part
in providing the platform for a future talent to blossom and grow!
I hope you believe, as we do, that the time
is right for a classical ballet company based in Dorset and the South West, and that this will evenuate in
the near future. Our youngsters may go off to London to take up full-time professional vocational training, but wouldn't
it be the icing on the cake if they could have the option of bringing their talent back and sharing it with the people of
the South West in its own regional ballet company? South Coast Ballet is just one small step towards generating the necessary
enthusiasm and support. The more support we can muster, the more positive an argument we will have when the time eventually
comes to generate regional and/or national funding and support.
For dancers and audiences alike the ballet is a magical
and thrilling experience - no matter what side of the footlights you are on. So whether you want to watch our
productions or dance with us, or engage with some aspect of the creative process, you will certainly not be short-changed,
you will enjoy what this most beautiful of art forms has to offer.
